The Shape of Sorrow

Apollo & Cyparissus

In Greek mythology, Apollo loved the beautiful youth Cyparissus, who shared a profound bond with a sacred stag. One summer afternoon, Cyparissus accidentally struck the resting animal with his javelin, fatally wounding his beloved companion. Overcome with grief, he begged Apollo to allow him to mourn forever. Apollo granted his wish, transforming him into a cypress tree, which became an enduring symbol of sorrow, remembrance, and eternal mourning.

This piece reimagines the ancient myth through a contemporary queer lens, blending classical figures with the raw energy of street art and graffiti. Apollo reaches toward his beloved in a moment of impending loss, while the stag's shadow serves as a haunting reminder of the tragedy. The contrast between idealized classical beauty and the distressed urban backdrop explores themes of love, vulnerability, and the fragility of human connection.

At its heart, the work reflects on the enduring nature of love and grief, reclaiming the emotional intimacy of ancient mythology and giving it a place within contemporary queer identity.
